Hole and Corner
“Every corner in a house, every angle in a room, every inch of secluded space in which we like to hide, or withdraw into ourselves, is a symbol of solitude for the imagination; that is to say, it is the germ of a room, or of a house.” -Gaston Bachelard The Poetics of Space
Hole and Corner is a site specific installation constructed by Joe Holliday and Mirabelle Jones for The Cube Gallery and artist’s residence in Los Angeles, CA. Using reclaimed wood and found materials, a structure resembling a house with an attic was constructed by Joe Holliday in one corner of the gallery space.
A lighting installation built of triangular mirrors and multicolor fluorescent lights was created by Mirabelle Jones inside the attic, viewable from the exterior as well as from the interior’s ground floor via holes and windows in the ceiling. The viewer is invited into the space by way of a single open entry point leading to two corners, one of wood with a porthole leading the viewer’s gaze upwards into the attic and one made entirely of windows inviting the viewer to gaze out into the gallery space.
These corners provide a place for self-reflection as well as creative invention, providing an intimate, private space within the public gallery setting while dissolving the barrier between the observer and the work. Light and shadow play an important role in the architecture of the structure, which sees an almost compulsive repetition of divisions and subdivisions in the visible surface due to the interspersing of tangible and intangible material.
Update: This installation has been moved to a permanent home at the East Jesus artists’ compound near the Salton Sea. An additional section by both artists is in progress (see below).
